Properties:
It is pungent and bitter in flavour, slightly
cold in nature and acts on the liver and
gallbladder channels. Pungent for dispersion,
bitter for purgation and aromatic for lifting
and dispersing, the herb is good at relieving
half-exterior and half-interior pathogens to
clear heat, and soothing the liver and
regulating the circulation of Qi to alleviate
mental depression. It is an important herb to
treat syndromes caused by alternate attack of
pathogenic cold and heat on the Shaoyang channel
and stagnation of the liver-qi. With its
relatively strong power of elevating Yang, the
herb is often used to treat Qi sinking in the
middle Jiao.
Effects:
Dispelling exopathogens to
clear heat, soothing the liver to alleviate
mental depression and elevating Yang and Qi.
Indication:
1. It
can be used in combination with scutellaria
root, such as Xiao Chaihu Decoction for soothing
the Shaoyang channel to clear heat, to treat
fever affected by exopathogens, alternate
attacks of pathogenic cold and heat, belonging
to syndrome of the Shaoyang channel affected by
pathogens; and with other herbs, for dispelling
exopathogens and clearing heat, to treat fever
affected by exopathogens.
2. To
treat stagnation of the liver-qi, distending
pain in the hypochondria, vexation and
irritation, or women¡¯s irregular menstruation.
mammary distending pain and lumps, etc., the
herb is used in combination with Chinese
angelica root, white peony root and other herbs
such as Xiaoyao Powder for soothing the liver to
alleviate mental depression, and promoting the
circulation of blood to regulate menstruation.
3.
To treat lingering diarrhea, loose stool,
proctoptosis, hysteroptosis, etc. caused by
deficiency of the spleen and stomach and Qi
sinking in the middle Jiao, the herb is used in
combination with astragalus root and cimicifuga
rhizome, such as Buzhong Yiqi Decoction for
invigorating Qi and elevation Yang.
Dosage and Administration:
3-10g.
Precaution:
Patients with Yin deficiency, excessive and
hyperactivity of the liver- Yang should be
careful in using the herb.
