Balbus Fritillariae

Properties: Chuanbeimu is bitter, sweet in flavour and slightly cold in nature, while Zhebeimu is bitter in flavour and cold in nature. They act on the lung and heart channels. The sweetness and coldness of chuanbeimu can moisten the lung and relieve dryness, to control cough effectively. It is indicated in cough due to dryness of the lung and chronic cough due to consumption. The bitterness of Zhebeimu can disperse and purge, and its coldness can clear away heat and is good at clearing away fire of the excessive type in the lung, resolving phlegm and congestion. It is applicable for treatment of cough due to external pathogens, cough due to phlegm-fire, furuncle, carbancle and scrofula.

Effects: Resolving phlegm, relieving cough, clearing heat and congestion.

Indications:

1. For treatment of cough due to phlegm-heat, irritating dry cough due to deficiency of Yin, and other syndromes, it is usually used together with Rhizoma Anemarrhenae in order to reinforce its action of resolving phlegm and arresting cough, such as Er Mu San; For treatment of injury of lung by warm-dryness, headache and fever, cough without much sputum, it can be used in combination with Radix Adenophorae, cough without much sputum, it can be used in combination with Radix Adenophorae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Fructus Gardeniae, and other drugs to relieve dryness and moisten the lung, resolve phlegm to arrest cough, such as Sang Xing Tang.

2. For treatment of carbuncles and ulcers due to noxious heat, breast abscess and pain, it is commonly used in combination with Flos Lonicerae, Fructus Forsythiae, Herba Taraxaci, Fructus Gardeniae, and other heat-clearing and toxin clearing herbs; For treatment of scrofula and subcu taneous nodules, it should be used in combination with Radix Scrophalariae, Concha Ostreae to resolve the hard lumps, resolve phlegm and scrofula, such as Xiaolou Wan.

Besides, it is also indicated in pulmonary abscess with spitting pus.

Dosage and Administration: 3-10g. when using its powder preparation, 1-2g were used by infusing in hot water. Chuanbeimu is used in treatment for moistening lung to arrest cough, while Zhebeimu, in treatment for resolving phlegm and lumps.

Precautions: It is antagonistic against Radix Aconiti and Radix Aconiti Praeparata.
